Stunburst is the rock solo project of Alexandre Carpentier, based in Québec. We caught up with him to ask few questions about his music, writing style and the local music scene in his hometown of Joliette:
Tell us a little bit about how Stunburst came to be. What made you want to start the project?
I created Stunburst in late 2017 after the release of my other project, Le Grand Veau. (A Trash/Prog/industrial project) I wanted to do a straightforward, catchy, big rock kind of vibe thing… Something I can do on a Gibson Les Paul instead of a 7 strings guitar… I’m a huge Alice in Chains, The Cult and Led Zeppelin fan, so it reflects a lot in the songwriting. As for starting the project it was real easy; I’m doing everything on the record! Guitars, Bass, Keyboards, Synths, Programming, mixing….It’s a one man project.
Tell us about your writing process. How do you get ideas for music?
Me jamming over a drum beat that I have in mind or programmed, a guitar melody or a bass line… It depends! Then I build around that. Often is it just goofing around and then, tah dah! An idea just popped!
Your music features an interesting range of influences, from Hendrix to Led Zeppelin. Who are you primarily influenced by?
As a kid, I was a big Metallica fan. Then later came Dimebag Darell, Guys in Slayer, Jerry Cantrell, Chuck Schuldiner, Steven Wilson. Also, Billy Duffy, Jimmy Page, Rory Gallagher, SRV, Frank Zappa, Robert Fripp, Alex Lifeson, Joe Bonamassa, Not all these names mentioned here are reflected in Stunburst, but they are strong influences.
Tell us a little bit about the music scene in Joliette. Is there a dominant genre? Are there any good bands you’d recommended?
The predominant styles are classical and traditional music! The motto of Joliette is ‘’Ground of music’’. There are a couple of rock bands there. A local death metal band ‘Burning The Oppressor’ is meant to be the next big thing here in Quebec. There are also plenty of gigs and festivals.
What’s next for Stunburst?
Doing more promo and writing new stuff! I’m not into doing shows anymore, but I’m definitely into composing stuff. Maybe a 2nd album next year! 😉
